I am the math Master!!! – uh not . . .

I honestly don’t get it.

Last weekend, I spend pretty much the whole weekend knitting. I swatched earlier in the week to make a pair of toe-up (I am going to do this until I beat it or it kills me) sock in Koigu KPM/KPPM. One of the reasons I wanted to do *these* toe up, is so I can get some idea of the height available to me to do a different pair of socks (similar style) top down.

So . . . 9sts to the inch on size 0s. 9 inch wide foot - 9*9 = 81 - 10% (for recommended negative ease in stockinette ) =72

Here begins the woe:

Sock toesI start knitting, cast on 9 sts and knit away, following the instructions from the class I took at stitches. I am knitting both toe-ups at the same time, 4-6 rows at a time on each sock. Knit up to the 72 on both socks (the pattern has me end up with 33 sts on the top and bottom w/ extra 3 each side in a little band coming out from the toe) and start working even for a few inches till I get past the “bunion” part of the foot. Hmm Clearly Too Big.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppppppppppppppppppppp sock 1, pick up all those little sts, and start further up the toe with 6 less sts (66 - actually some how ended up with 65). Two less sts on both the top and bottom. That seemed about right. Knit up and to the bunion . . . uhm . . .still TOO BIG.

Well I didn’t want to rip sock 1 back again, so I have started on sock 2. I ripped back a bit and and dropped back to 60 sts and am knitting up the foot again. I can’t imagine that I will have to make it smaller. I am a little concerned that I’ll have to spilt the difference between 60 and 66, but we’ll see.

But I a LOVING the way the socks LOOK, which is good, because it keeps me working with all of the backing and filling.
